This study aims to describe the principal’s strategy in optimizing the participation of parents to improve school quality. This research uses qualitative research type with phenomenology approach. The study design was a multi case study. The object of research is in two elementary schools (SD) in Malang, SD Negeri Kauman 1 Malang and SD Laboratorium Universitas Negeri Malang. The subjects of this study are the principal as key informants, Class Teachers, School Committee Leaders, Class Paguyuban Officers, and Student Parents. Facts and information were obtained through in-depth interview techniques, observations, and documentation studies. Research instruments are researchers assisted by interview guides, observation guidelines, and documentation guidelines. Data analysis techniques using interactive model is through data reduction, data presentation, conclusion drawing, and data verification, and comparative constant technique. Validity of data used through credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. The results of the study show that the principal’s strategy in optimizing parental participation includes: making attractive and useful programs for parents, involving parents in school programming and implementation, applying transparent and accountable principles , the intensity of communication with parents through various communication media, and create a conducive climate. The optimization of parent participation is expected to synergistically lead to a goal of improving school quality.
