Abstract

This paper provides a historical and critical analysis of the evolution of educational policies in Nigeria from independence in1960 to 2025. It traces the trajectory of educational reforms from the colonial legacy through post-independence reconstruction, military and democratic interventions, to modern day innovation shaped by globalisation and technology. The study adopts a historical analytical approach, relying on policy documents, scholarly literature, and reports from governmental and international agencies. It argued that although successive governments in Nigeria have initiated laudable educational reforms aimed at achieving national development, weak implementation, inadequate funding and political instability have consistently undermined policy outcomes. The paper concludes that the future of education in Nigeria depends on sustained investment, policy continuity, digital innovation, and effective governance. Recommendations were offered for improving the relevance and sustainability of educational reforms.
