Influence of Artificial Intelligence on Students' Academic Performance in Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo, Nigeria

This study investigated the influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on students' academic performance in Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo, Nigeria. The rapid proliferation of AI tools in higher education necessitates empirical examination of their effects on learning outcomes. A descriptive survey design was adopted with a sample of 250 undergraduate students selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire titled "Influence of AI on Students' Academic Performance Questionnaire" (IASAPQ) and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings revealed high awareness (92.8%) and usage (74.5%) of ChatGPT among students, with AI tools primarily used for research (84.3%), essay writing (79.6%), and grammar checking (70.2%). A significant positive correlation (r = 0.342, p < 0.05) was found between AI usage and academic performance. Students using AI tools frequently achieved significantly higher CGPAs (Mean = 3.34) compared to non-frequent users (Mean = 3.09). However, major challenges including unreliable internet connectivity (84.3%), high data costs (79.6%), and inadequate training (66.4%) were identified. The study concludes that AI tools positively influence academic performance when used appropriately as learning aids. Recommendations include development of institutional AI policies, infrastructure investment, and integration of AI literacy into curricula.References
